Whether you’re looking for a good movie or a binge-worthy series, Netflix has a lot of options. But which ones should you be watching?
The streamer has a great selection of TV shows, and we’ve rounded up our favorites right now. From new hits to classics that are worth a second look, these are the best shows on Netflix right now.
The Queen’s Gambit
The Queen’s Gambit debuted on Netflix last year, but it didn’t take long for it to become one of the streaming giant’s most popular limited series. Based on Walter Tevis’s novel of the same name, the seven-episode drama won near-unanimous praise from critics and audiences alike.
The story follows Beth Harmon (Anya Taylor-Joy), an orphaned chess prodigy who struggles with substance abuse while climbing the ranks of the game. The series is a beautiful and compelling watch and has won numerous awards including 11 Emmys for Taylor-Joy’s performance.
But while The Queen’s Gambit is a fascinating depiction of a storied game and a young woman battling addiction, it also has its fair share of flaws. For example, it doesn’t explore the significant role race and gender play in chess or their respective impact on women in general.
The Last Dance
The Last Dance is an incredible sports documentary that follows the 1997-98 Chicago Bulls and the journey that led them to their first NBA championship.
Its 10 episodes were released in early March and quickly surpassed the 6.3 million viewers that ESPN’s 30 for 30 Bo Jackson series had achieved a few years prior. The documentary was a success outside of the United States as well, with Netflix reporting that its international audience grew by 23.8 million viewers over its first four weeks.
As well as a wealth of new interviews, fans can enjoy a soundtrack that takes in classic hip-hop music from the period. Tracks include OutKast, Run-DMC, LL Cool J, and Naughty By Nature.
Dark
Dark, Jantje Friese and Baran bo Odar’s first Netflix series, combines a number of different genre influences into a sci-fi thriller that’s both scary and entertaining. The show features a wormhole, supernatural twists and four interconnected families caught up in a time travel mystery.
Despite its complexity, though, Dark offers some serious insight into the big conflicts that humanity faces, especially in terms of free will and mortality.
Ultimately, it’s an exciting, rewarding journey that’s well worth the time and effort involved. It’s also a refreshing take on determinism, which is a concept that can seem scary and unforgiving. Fortunately, there are ways to approach the ideas of Dark that will help you get through it without becoming completely overwhelmed.
Mo
Mo Najjar is a Palestinian refugee living in Houston, Texas. He’s been waiting for the federal government to hear his asylum case so he can get a path to citizenship.
He can’t hold a job because he’s undocumented, but he makes money hustling bootleg goods. His family lives in constant fear of being deported back to the Middle East, so he just wants to keep them together.
It’s not for everyone, but it’s a genuinely funny show with a good underlying message about immigration and the struggle of young Muslims.
Mindhunter
David Fincher’s serial-killer series Mindhunter is one of Netflix’s most underrated offerings. It is based on a true-crime book, but its style and approach are quite different from the typical prestige TV genre.
This is because the show takes a historical approach to criminal profiling and explores killers in forensic terms, rather than glamorizing them with blood and gore. It also follows a young FBI agent (Jonathan Groff) who is obsessed with getting inside the minds of killers.
In season 2, Mindhunter introduces us to one of the most infamous serial killers of all time, Dennis Rader – better known as BTK. This is an important episode because it reveals how the detectives’ conversations with Rader, and the killer himself, can lead them to new insights into the crimes.
The Takeaway
As you can see, there are some fantastic shows on Netflix right now. Unfortunately, many are on the US version of the streaming site. Still, there are ways around it if come avere Netflix USA in Italia.
